Aoun, Salam and Berri meet head of ceasefire committee amid intensified Israeli strikes
President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri met Thursday with head of the ceasefire monitoring committee, U.S. General Clearfield, amid intensified Israeli strikes on south and east Lebanon.
Aoun and Salam urged Clearfield to pressure Israel to halt its almost-daily attacks and end its occupation of five hills in south Lebanon, stressing that Lebanon is committed to the agreement.
"Lebanon is committed to completing the disarmament south of the Litani River before the end of the year," Salam said, after his government tasked the army with preparing a plan for disarming Hezbollah under U.S. pressure and intensified Israeli strikes.
Despite the ceasefire reached in November last year, Israel has kept up its strikes, usually saying it is targeting Hezbollah sites and operatives.
Aoun said the Israeli strikes are "unjustified" and "unacceptable", adding that they are targeting civilians and industries.
On Thursday, Israeli airstrikes targeted mountains in the Bekaa, with the Israeli army claiming the strikes targeted "facilities for Hezbollah's al-Radwan force."
Clearfield for his part vowed in his talks with the three Lebanese leaders that the ceasefire committee will be meeting more frequently to make sure the ceasefire is implemented.
