Qahwaji: Those Demanding Facilitation of Gunmen Movement 'Made the Wrong Request'

Those who are demanding a facilitation of the crossing of gunmen from and into Syria have “made the wrong request and knocked on the wrong door,” Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji has said.

In an interview with Al-Afkar magazine to be published Friday, Qahwaji stressed that the army had boosted its deployment in the northern area of Wadi Khaled, which borders Syria, noting that “the military forces are exerting utmost efforts to control the border, prevent smuggling in both directions, and thwart any infiltration attempt.”

During a meeting with Interior Minister Marwan Charbel on Tuesday, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly “recognized Lebanon’s efforts to provide assistance to Syrians fleeing the violence in their country and she encouraged the Lebanese government to continue its cooperation with the international community and provide for the humanitarian needs and safety of all Syrians who have fled to Lebanon, including dissenters and deserters,” the U.S. embassy said in a statement.

She noted the Lebanese government’s “right and responsibility to secure its borders, and called for the protection of all disarmed Syrians, including members of the Free Syrian Army.”

The U.N. refugee agency has said about 2,000 Syrians had fled to Lebanon in recent days, many from Homs and particularly its opposition stronghold of Baba Amr, which was stormed by Syrian troops last Thursday after a month of bombardment.

According to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, 7,058 Syrians have registered in Lebanon as refugees but that number is expected to rise with the new influx of arrivals.

Qahwaji’s remarks come after the Lebanese army arrested Sunday a group of Syrian gunmen who had entered Lebanese territory via the border town of al-Qaa, seizing a car and a large cache of weapons.

During the putsch attempt of May, those hezbollahi weapons were pointed at me, I was in my flat in Beirut and guess who came to my building at forbid me to keep my curtains shut across MY flat. When I was on the balcony, who pointed a Kalashnikov at me and forced me to go inside? The Israeli occupant never did this to me. The Syrian occupant never did this to me either. Only a lawless terrorist group terrorizes its own citizen. You're wrong to believe that a majority of the Lebanese wants those missiles and rockets on our territory.

Thumb jcamerican 08 March 2012, 22:15

The Lebanese army is doing the right thing. Hope they don't get dragged into fighting some idiots' war.

Missing aris 08 March 2012, 23:15

Lebanon has a duty to support all syRian civilians and should do its utmost to get rid of the Assad killing machine for its own future.

Default-user-icon lebneneh (Guest) 09 March 2012, 00:20

Aris explain why Lebanon has any duty to Syria? Under who's authority, if the Lebanese don't want to get involved?

Before you answer, don't forget the Syrian army is composed of syrian people, who up until only a few years ago had no problem attacking the Lebanese and occupying Lebanon.

Default-user-icon Rusty (Guest) 09 March 2012, 00:38

It might be your personal duty, and nobody can stop you from entering through Jordan or Iraq or Turkey. Leave Lebanon as a whole out of it. We have enough problems of our own. Go help them with primesuspect and your other excited friends but keep everybody else out of it. I only wish you had done so when the Syrian boots were smashing our heads while the filthy politicians that you so love today (Jumblat, Geagea before he was dumped, Hariri Clan and the rest of the low lives) were feasting with their friends the Syrian occupiers.

Thumb joesikemrex 09 March 2012, 05:15

Not our problem. Syrians can do that themselves.

Thumb primesuspect 08 March 2012, 23:58

Dear General: Who does weapon smuggling work in one way? you let 40.000+ rockets cross into lebanon thefore you allowed a private militia outpower you yet you don't allow the few free syrian people get rid of their dictatorship? Are you also on Bachar's payroll?

Thumb benzona 09 March 2012, 01:39

waouw. I'm surprised you haven't been banned for insulting people. I guess, it happens when you're out of arguments. PrimeSuspect, I agree with you. bigdig: I didn't know that the Pasdaran walking in the Dahye were granted Lebanese citizenship. Ask your brothers and cousins how they managed to become Lebanese after leaving Teheran's poor suburbs.

Default-user-icon Horus (Guest) 09 March 2012, 01:59

bdig, we dont need iranians on our soil,if your one of them or support them, why dont you go fight Israel from in Israel.

Thumb primesuspect 09 March 2012, 03:43

what do you keep barking like a dog? 40.000 missiles as you say are for the Lebanese. you should emphasize that they were and will be again used against Lebanese. Now, go back to your master doggy.

Thumb joesikemrex 09 March 2012, 05:19

We will see if these missiles are for the Lebanese, yet to be proven. I believe they are only for your Hizb, to terrorize the free Lebanese

Thumb thepatriot 09 March 2012, 10:36

I think we should control our borders from wherever and whoever wants to create unstability in Lebanon. The struggl for freedom of syrians is a very good cause, but we shouldnt drag Lebanon in it and harbor their " resistance " . We have enough interior problemes with the palestinians as well . So another armed faction in the country that can turn against us is not recommanded. If the americans want us to harbor them , i say they should harbor them as well or give them military help otherwise let them just shut up , they have meddled enough in Lebanese affairs and i will never forgive how they " helped us " during civil war by selling us to the syrians and palestinians. Although i disagree with Hezbollah fans and want them to integrate the lebanese army, Hezbollah in my opinion should be the last to be disarmed after a full withdrawal of israelis from our land.

Default-user-icon Skyfall (Guest) 09 March 2012, 01:04

But for me palestinians and others are the first one who should give up their weapons. Lets not forget that Hezbollah has showed a lot of restraint and could have taken easily Lebanon but didnt. I disagree with them but they are not to be compared with other non lebanese factions armed and ready to kill us again.

Default-user-icon Horus (Guest) 09 March 2012, 01:56

Ya General what is good for the geese and good for the gander, stop the flow of arms across the border to the militia as well, your chances of becoming the next president is gone with the fall of this regime.

You might as well do the right thing and protect lebanon as a whole nation not just the interests of the Syrians.

Default-user-icon John Williams (Guest) 09 March 2012, 02:00

If March 14 was in power there would already be a war zone on Lebanon's Northern Border. Why? The Arab Spring has not helped any country that it has touched. Notice Israel is even stronger internationally and the Palestinians are all but forgotten. Lebanese people should be not want to see a Civil War in Syria that would obviously spill over the boorder. The USA does not care about Syria,Arabs or Lebanon . Hezbollah is obviously a target. Lebanon will be in ruin if the Neocons accomplish their objective and Assad falls.

Default-user-icon Enough (Guest) 09 March 2012, 05:28

Another one that likes to blow hot air... Why don't you speak up when Assad's military kills Lebanese on Lebanese land?

It is a good thing that the military seized a large cache of weapons. There are way too many already. Were there any long range rockets? I bet Qahwaji could make the biggest seizure of non-state weapons in the history of the world. If he would only drop into Nasrallah's rat hole.

Qahwaji, you should be protecting the borders against all non Lebanese. If you are going to start making speeches about illegal weapons entering the country, then stop turning a blind eye to the endless supply of armament heading for the Irainan militia.

Thumb joesikemrex 09 March 2012, 06:55

After 30 years of the Syrian's following the Geneva conventions in Lebanon's occupation, now we are being reminded these things exist...
What goes around comes around. I feel sorry for woman and children, I know what Syrians made us go through....

The term "cowards" is reserved for your Party of Evil and their Iranian masters who are holding 50% of the Lebanese population at gunpoint and taking away their God given right to choose what kind of future they want for their children and their country. No sir, you are the cowards and when you loose the power to terrorize citizen with your illegitimate weapons we will see how many followers you will have left and what direction Lebanon will take. What goes around comes around and you will get your turn.

Thumb thepatriot 09 March 2012, 10:40

Cowards?
The cowards are those who plan executions and ask third parties to carry them on!
Cowards are those who do not dare take back the Golan!
Cowards are those who execute their people to remain in power!
Cowards are those calling themseves "resistance" and don't resist!
Cowards are those living in the sewer!
Those are cowards ya FT!

Thumb thepatriot 09 March 2012, 11:45

Please read again what you just wrote...hehehe... are you a stand up comedian FT? I Love the way you define resistance ya FT :D
