U.S. Official in Lebanon Next Week to Tackle Lebanon’s Commitment to Iran, Syria Sanctions

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen is expected to visit to Lebanon next week to hold talks with a number of high-ranking officials, including Bank of Lebanon Governor Riyad Salameh, reported An Nahar daily on Friday.

Concerned circles did not reveal the purposes of the visit, but it has been understood that the U.S. official will tackle the financial sanctions against Syria and Iran, and Lebanon’s commitment to them, added the daily.

It also said that Cohen’s visit is a follow up to the one carried out in November by his assistant, Daniel Glaser, in light of the Lebanese Canadian Bank crisis, it added.

Glaser had met with Prime Minister Najib Miqati, Salameh, and a number of representatives from the Lebanese banking community.

He emphasized the need for Lebanon to take the necessary steps to ensure a transparent and well-regulated financial sector for Lebanon’s continued prosperity.

He stressed the need for authorities to protect the Lebanese financial sector from potential Syrian attempts to evade U.S. and EU financial sanctions.

The U.S. official reiterated his country’s view that it is important to ensure that the current instability in Syria does not undermine the Lebanese financial sector.

The United States, which lists Hizbullah as a “terrorist” group, filed a lawsuit in 2011 against the Lebanese Canadian Bank, accusing it of laundering hundreds of millions of dollars in drug proceeds from an alleged cocaine trafficker with ties to the Lebanese party.

Yeah just listen to what he has to say first, he is Jewish and a very smart guy to be in this position! So think before you talk

All what FT said, he is so smart, he needs to teach the lebanese idiots what to do. Go read articles about US banks who laundered money for drugs dealers and paid the fines gladly. I guess you need him to tell you how to run your banking system in Lebanon.

"He is Jewish and a very smart guy to be in this position?"... LoL. Aris, your a classic.

They tried to overthrow Syrian regime from inside, they saw the replacement to come could be extremely worse their withdrawal tactics now comes the sanctions pressures as their last bullet...I believe that after Lebanon, Syria is the closest country to democracy compared to all other Arab countries.

Sophia, there's nothing democratic about Syria. But why do we think that western style democracy is always the best form of government? Look at Lebanon. I think that Lebanon needs a decentralized government with a strong secular military dictatorship that rotates leaders every 10 years, with individual liberties and freedoms protected under a well thought out constitution. Leave the democratic voting to local municipality elections.

ive always thought that.. good one bro.. im from sydney. voting needsd to be governorate or qada based for local governments or municipalities.. why don`t we enforce that, its written in the taef agreement maybe the southern municipalities wont be able to rake in the lbp....coz they seem lke the central governemnt will desperse taxes according to which area pay the most taxes to the lebanese nation.. i believe if we had mini states with a police force only in each state no claimsof independence and freedom of movement for all lebanese citizens i truly believe it will be a success.. the old system thats seen countless wars political crisis after political crises its time for decentralisation and a fedral system

another example of us "soft power", in other words: blackmail

ado.australia. i totally agree with you on democracy. it seems taboo to reconsider the western model of democracy where lobbying power and campaign money determine "free people's will". but i think that a strong secular dictatorship in leb should rotate every 5-6 years to avoid the natural corruption of power and the erosion of innovative and reformist spirit of rulers

and daniel glaser is jewish, amazing guys these jews are. 2000 years without a homeland and now rule the world...and still have their language! you have admire them guys...it will us the arabs another 2000 years to get to where these guys began...

Thumb ado.australia 16 March 2012, 15:07

Yes we should admire the Jews. They are a model of unity and strength. But the Zionist movement which most jews support, is a movement of racism(because they believe Jews are a race) and fascism. The nazis that persecuted and committed heineous atrocities against them, ironically, can be compared to Zionism in such a disturbing way. I am not against Jews but Zionism. There is a difference, but most Jewish politicians in the USA are zionists.

Lol at aris. Jews of today are not the ancient israelites. And hebrew was re-introduced in 1948 as a language for people with jewish faith regardless of ethnic roots, before that only rabbis learned hebrew, in the same way, pakistani, malaysian, turkish and other non arab muslims learn arabic for a religious purpose, it doeant mean they become arabs. Take your bs elsewhere. Thanks.

By the way aris, stop pretending to be arab, we all know that you are "israeli". Your previous comments exposed you. Pathetic to say the least how low you guys fall. Keep giving yourself praise by pretending to be arab hahahahahahahahaha

now the time has come to cut the lebanese finger of syria and iran.. the pressure will be directed principally to sleiman and mikati through the financial sector( lebanese canadian bank as an ex) and finally to the lebanese army by the way of the lebanese syrian border.
N.B.being jewish or yankee or zimbabewan, is the same for the purpose of the visit, just adjust ur brain to the way u can avoid the pressure, if u can.
