Head of the private school teachers association Nehme Mahfoud revealed on Wednesday that the Syndicate Coordination Committee reached an agreement with Prime Minister Najib Miqati over the new salaries scale for public workers.

“The deal included the teachers and the employees of the public sector altogether,” Mahfoud told reporters after heading a delegation to the Grand Serail.

The premier held a meeting with the SCC’s delegation in the presence of Education Minister Hassan Diab and State Minister Marwan Khaireddine.

“Miqati stressed that he refuses injustice,” Mahfoud said.

He noted that the PM announced a preliminary stance and will address the issue during the upcoming meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with studying the demands of the SCC.

Mahfoud said that the cabinet will later set a date for the session that would swiftly approve the decision regarding the new wages scale.

On Tuesday, the SCC held a nationwide strike for an hour as protesters lashed out at statements by the premier who had said that the cabinet would divide the wages scale and refer the bill on the salaries of the teachers independently if the parliament delayed the approval of the public sector wages.

The public sector employees and teachers refused Miqati’s suggestion, stressing their unity.

The SCC is a coalition of private and public school teachers and public sector employees.
