Dar al-Fatwa, the highest religious Sunni Muslim authority in Lebanon, on Thursday announced that Friday will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, as the Higher Islamic Shiite Council declared that Ramadan will start on Saturday.

The holy month will begin on Friday in most Arab countries, religious authorities announced, but in Oman and Syria as well as for Iraq's Sunni Muslims and in non-Arab Iran it will start on Saturday.

Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen were among those to announce a Friday start.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and strive to be more pious and charitable.

The month begins with the sighting of the new moon, which varies from country to country.

Has Ramadan ever been the same for both the Shia and Sunnis in the last 20 years? It seems they want to be different.

Well duh. The whole concept of shiaism is to be diffirent from Muslims. That is why shiaism was created in the first place. The issue is not sunni vs shia, its shiaism vs Islam. And for that one can not blame the mainstream muslims, rather its the fault of those who made their own religion called shiaism while at the same time refusing to let go of the name islam. The quran even states (La takouno shee3an) yet they created a new religion with that name and insist on it beeing islam even though its not. Druze have their own religion as well and they dont call it Islam because they know its a diffirent thing. Why shiite still insist on calling their religion "part of Islam" is only to confuse people. Had the shiites simply declared they are a seperate religion then much of this conflict would die and people would simple ignore eachother instead of always arguing. The blame is on those that created their own religion in the name of islam.

Yes. Of course. Today Ramadan starts for most sunnis and even the shiites that follow Sayyid Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.

Its not about being different. It's about seeing the new moon which marks the beginning of the new month. Fadlallah on one hand did this scientifically and through calculations while others still wait to "see" the moon.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. The person who calls the day is the one who has to pay the "kiffara" for all who followed him if he was wrong :)
