The Higher Islamic Shiite Council announced on Saturday that Sunday will be the first day of Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Earlier Iraq's top Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani announced that Monday is the first day the Eid.

On Friday, Lebanon’s highest Sunni Muslim religious authority, Dar al-Fatwa, said the crescent moon which marks the new lunar month was not sighted on Friday night and that Saturday would as a result be considered the 30th and final day of the dawn-to-dusk month of fasting, announcing that Sunday would be Eid al-Fitr.

The religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Yemen have also announced that Eid al-Fitr will begin Sunday.
