Opposition Criticizes Miqati’s ‘Insufficient’ Message on Syria Shelling

The March 14 opposition has criticized Prime Minister Najib Miqati for asking Lebanon’s ambassador to Damascus to relay to Syrian authorities “objections” over the shelling of Lebanese border towns, a ministerial source said on Tuesday.

The source told al-Liwaa newspaper that Miqati’s request neither included a complaint nor a protest.

On Monday, Miqati requested the ambassador, Michel al-Khoury, to send an urgent message to the Syrian Foreign Ministry over Syria’s ongoing shelling of Lebanese border towns.

The message includes Lebanon’s warning of the “negative repercussions” the shelling is having on the security measures the army has taken to maintain the stability along the Lebanese-Syrian border.

But the ministerial source said the March 14 coalition and mainly al-Mustaqbal movement believe Miqati’s request came late and was “insufficient.”

According to An Nahar daily, the prime minister gave al-Khoury the instructions after coordinating the stance with President Michel Suleiman during their meeting at Baabda palace last Saturday.

Presidential sources said the request came as an attempt “to consolidate Lebanon’s right in defending its land and people without creating any crisis with Syria.”

Sources close to Miqati also told the newspaper that the letter is aimed at putting an end to any action that harms the Lebanese and inflicts casualties among them.

“This is unacceptable,” they said, adding Miqati hopes to resolve this issue immediately.

But their comments came amid overnight shelling on northern towns and villages bordering Syria.

The shelling was the result of violent clashes between Syrian government troops and armed opposition fighters.

Syria's ruler is the one person that gave our current PM his load of money. He can't harm the hand that fed him even less when it's a friend.

For those misguided souls who believe that the Assad regime is going away anytime soon, you have once again fooled yourself into thinking the USA is your friend. The USA is neither your friend nor your foe. The USA is only looking after its own interest, if this benefits you, then it is purely unintentional. History has taught us that the USA will prop up or support the Assad regime when it needs something from it and always at the expense of Lebanon. Mistaking foreign interest for friendship will continue to result in a fractured Lebanon.

Thank you for patronizing me. Please do not twist my words to suit your agenda and conspiracy theories. The USA isn't toying with anything, it's just pursuing its interest as a Super Power. I reject your theories and your party's talking points wholesale and with extreme prejudice. If a USA action happens to suit your partie's agenda, you would be praising it. The USA is my home country and I am a proud citizen. I came here because it is a Super Power and I want to see this great nation restored to its former glory where its military force is both feared and respected by those who you seem to admire and used as deterrent for those fanatics who think they can take the it on and somehow win!

I am proud to admit my allegiance to the United States of America, my country and the greatest nation on earth, who will never grant the likes of you a tourist visa to come visit and learn how great we are. So sad for you that you cannot see all the good that my country does in the world and that you only see your per-cold war archaic Arab Nationalism and I am sorry the USA saved your sorry behind from the likes of Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler and soon the devils oppressing the good people of Iran. My country will always be a Super Power and your unadulterated hatred for it renders you delusional when you say the USA is going down. By the way, in order to hasten our demise, immediately stop drinking Coke, throw away you iPhone and never use another HP, Dell or Xbox.
