Tensions were high in the hometown of slain Sunni Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed in light of the release of three officers linked to the cleric's death in May.
Mustaqbal bloc MP Khaled al-Daher slammed the decision to release the officers, deeming its a “suspicious decision aimed at creating tensions in Lebanon ahead of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Lebanon.”
He made his remarks after holding talks with a number of officials from Abdul Wahed's hometown of al-Bireh in Akkar in the North.
Daher added: “It's as if they want the Pope's visit to be a failure.”
“We accuse the Syrian regime of seeking this failure,” he stressed.
He revealed that the March 14 camp, under former Premier Saad Hariri's direction, will thwart the efforts to “create strife” in Lebanon.
The MP said that the efforts are underway to contain the situation and ease the tensions.
Meanwhile, Abdul Wahed's brother, Alaa, urged the concerned authorities to retract their decision “immediately”.
He said that his brother’s case has become a “national cause,” revealing that he had received telephone calls from Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and March 14 General Secretariat coordinator Fares Soaid on the matter.
Three Lebanese Army officers, who were arrested over the shooting of Abdul Wahed and his companion in May, were released on bail.
The National News Agency said Friday the Military Court of Cassation's head, Judge Elias Nayfeh, ordered the release of the officers on LL300,000 bail each.
Military examining magistrate Judge Riyad Abu Ghida issued arrest warrants against the three officers in July almost a week after their release along with eight soldiers.
They were arrested over the killing of Abdul Wahed and Sheikh Mohammed Merheb at the army checkpoint in the Akkar town of al-Kweikhat.

it is amazing to see the timing of this release just to create sectarian strife ahead of the pope's visit!
it is like m8 want desperately to stop the pope's visit!
they could have just waited a few more days on such a contentious matter.....
m8 are desperate and they show it more and more...

My friend, the Pope will come to Lebanon and walk its holy land and no one is able to stop that. Historical events and data proves that this land is holy and will for ever be.

ye geha what is is m8 interest in ruining the pope's visit?
For once that justice seems to act independently, politicians are asking publicly the judges to overthrow their decisions. No one criticised the judiciary (they criticised the ISF though) in the Samaha case!!

let see
two sheikhs killed by army after been fired at =chaos in akkar
one christian killed at madfoon checkpoint and his brother a major accepted the blame for his brother mistake =no chaos
please mr daher go to saudi arabia with your wahabie and shut the f**k up you murderer

I think for some mysterious reason sleiman (and the lebanese state) got a boost. (maybe americans-saudis started backing sleiman). This is why we are seeing more and more manifestation of state power compared to 2 months ago. Still waiting for some of those arrogant mokdads to be arrested.

The Hezz led gov't let these guys go, but want the Samaha case to end and don't care about "armed wings" of thug families. Everyone knows the truth.

thank you for your politeness :) it shows what you are :)
just to clarify: the shia officer that shot this guy had already a running with him previously and was sent there on purpose, knowing this is the only road to reach where they were going.
this was a premedited murdor to create sectarian strife arranged by hizbushaitan and the syrian regime.
it s because this did not succeed that the syrian regime and hizbushaitan initiated the fighting in tripoli, and ordered samaha to place bombs, all in the same directin.
hope your mind can digest and comprehend that.

the army did not do this, rather a rogue grroup in the army did.
furthermore, the plan was that the news of the killing of this would reach the gathring, and then they would attack the ssnp gathering in retaliation.
thank God this plan did not succeed, and hopefully all the efforts to ignite the north would fail, but I am not hopefull.
hizbushaitan and their cronies friends are now cornered, and they will create strife the same way as things are ging on in syria now.
please guys, wake up and see clearly what is going on around you instead of still bying in on some empty slogans.

We all know when @check point you must comply with the army .Sheikh or no Sheihk must show respect to the army ,and what is he doing with all these weapons in his car is he going to the Sunday Markets, leave the army out of this shit ..

Mr. Shark.... when you write something, please give it some credibility. First of all Mr. Aoun said there was Alcohol in the car, then everybody add something like; arms, bombs, molotov and may be will reach to tanks. In this area we don't have check point since the syrian army left! why 3 officers on check point? the car not belong to him as the sheikh he not not afford to have a car, this in case they find anything inside, the owner who is free shall be questioned not killing the sheikhs- Brief, the movies of Wiaam Wahab and other syrian thugs are clear to everybody. But yalli ikhtashou matou
