إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe European Union's Political and Security Committee expressed on Saturday support for the Lebanese government in its efforts to preserve security and backed the Lebanese Armed Forces in confronting internal and external threats.
The members of the committee chaired by Olof Skoog met with Prime Minister Najib Miqati in the presence of EU Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst at the Grand Serail.
“We support the efforts of the Lebanese government in preserving security, overcoming divisions and consolidating national unity and peace,” Skoog said after the meeting.
He urged the Lebanese to work on limiting tension and finding sustainable solutions to primary issues linked to national unity.
The delegation met on Friday with President Michel Suleiman, Speaker Nabih Berri, al-Mustaqbal movement leader Fouad Saniora and army leaders.
“We fully support the work of the Lebanese Armed Forces, mainly the Lebanese army, which should abide by the law to guarantee the security of all Lebanese against external and internal threats,” said Skoog.
“The Lebanese government's commitment to the full implementation of Lebanon's international obligations, including U.N. Security Council Resolutions 1559, 1680, 1701 and 1757 is essential,” he said.
He also lauded the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and strongly condemned repeated violations and other security incidents along the border with Syria.
