Civil defense teams succeeded on Wednesday in extinguishing a fire that had been raging for five days in the outskirts of the northern town of al-Qoubaiyat and nearby areas in Akkar.

The army and civil defense teams had struggled to combat the blaze due to the difficulty to reach the affected areas and the lack of roads that would allow firetrucks to reach the region, An Nahar daily reported on Wednesday.

Voice of Lebanon radio added that high winds had also spread the fire, making their efforts more difficult.

The army had employed helicopters to extinguish the flames.

The daily added that the blaze has been nearing the houses in Wadi al-Halsban, prompting a large number of volunteers to attempt to extinguish the fire using primitive methods however.

Despite the difficulties, the Civil Defense announced that it succeeded, along with the army's assistance, in extinguishing fires that broke out on Sunday and Monday in al-Dweir, Ansar, al-Tairy, Koneen, Ain al-Dilib, Beit Yahoun, Ghazir, al-Hadath, Aramoun, Harissa, Beit Shabab, al-Mtein, Sawfar and other regions throughout Lebanon.
