Two people were killed on Tuesday as firefighters battled to extinguish a fire that erupted in Batal Design furniture factory in Jadra on the Chouf coast.

According to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3), the civil defense team lifted the body of Hisham Hallal, who isn't an employee at the factory but was there for maintenance work.

Later on Tuesday, the Directorate General of Civil Defense issued a statement saying its crews managed to pull out the bodies of two workers who died in the blaze.

It also said it scrambled 15 firefighting vehicles and 50 firemen to the site, noting that their "prompt intervention led to preventing the spread of the flames to the factory and a large part of the warehouse."

The radio station said that firefighters were struggling with the fire due to the large quantities of sponge, wood and flammable material.

Head of Jadra Municipality Father Joseph al-Qazzi told VDL that the fire will not reach the nearby houses as there are concrete barriers separating them.

According to LBCI, the fire was caused by an electrical wire friction.

The factory contains around 100 employees, who managed to evacuate the facility.
