Makari Suspends Subcommittee Meetings over Death Threats

Deputy Speaker Farid Makari voiced his concerns on Saturday for the lives of five deputies, in light of last week's assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Wissam al-Hasan, reported the pan-Arab daily al-Hayat on Saturday.

He added that the crime has prevented him from resuming meetings on a new electoral law, he told the daily.

“There are five MPs of the parliamentary subcommittees who have received death threats and they aren't leaving their homes,” Makari said.

“I would convene the parliamentary subcommittees' meetings, but the only obstacle stopping me is the security situation that should be taken into consideration," he explained.

The subcommittee, made up of representatives of rival blocs, is studying controversial items related to the type of electoral system and the size of districts to be adopted in the upcoming parliamentary polls, set for 2013.

Five deputies of the opposition March 14 alliance received death threats from Syria through text messages, days after the assassination of Hasan, media reports said.

Makari was referring to himself along with al-Mustaqbal MPs Serge Torsarkissian and Ahmed Fatfat, National Struggle Front MP Akram Shehayeb, Lebanese Forces MP George Adwan, and Phalange MP Sami Gemayel.

Hasan was assassinated in a massive car bomb in Beirut's Ashrafiyeh district on October 19. The explosion left 3 three dead and more than 100 wounded.

Makari noted that Lebanon's security is exposed and has become subject to threats.

He added: “I don’t want to be held accountable for the safety of deputies should anything happen to them and whoever wishes to shoulder such a responsibility should call for the resumption of sessions.”

What does SKYPE has to do with it?Do you think they will discuss politics via SKYPE as if they will discuss what to do for the weekend?Idiot!!

Thumb primesuspect 27 October 2012, 16:37

He's double idiot, the Lebanese bandwidth doesn't even allow high res communications.

Missing samiam 27 October 2012, 17:26

I don't know if you actually live in Lebanon because if you did, you wouldn't have brought this up. Internet, in Lebanon, seriously?

Missing peace 27 October 2012, 19:23

lol, yes internet doesn t work as it should! it takes hours to download a simple youtube video for example...
when in europe they can watch an entire film in streaming and they pay only 40 USD a month to have high speed internet including TV, net, telephone subscription...
yes lebanon is still in the cave ages!

'faster that it was in 2005' still doesn't make it fast enough to skype properly. In addition, the telecom sector as well as the electricity sector has been used to fund the government at the expense of improving the sectors--until the May 7th coalition changes its views on privatization of the sectors, Lebanon will remain a 4th world country in telecom and electricity because any operating revenue can't be used to improve existing services because it will be used to pay a unrelated, probably unneeded government employee.

@samiam,,,,slow or fast connection doesn't have anything to do with what flameshitter was saying.he meant that M14 can use SKYPE to discuss what they have to since they cannot go out of their houses for security reasons.is he normal or what?politicians discussing their plans over internet?really flame,,,you,re an idiot with A+.

Does it really matter Bernard if Assad himself sent the threat ?

When you receive a threat, whoever may have sent it, it remains a threat ! It doesn't necessarily mean the sender will act on it but it's reason enough to take precautions.

The real people getting dumber are the likes of you who make up such silly arguments that are completely irrelevant in a failed attempt to justify your leaders positions.

M14 aren't stupid to make this up. The Telecom Data which M8 keeps so safely can even prove these SMS were sent. How about you release the data and follow up on the threat, investigate ... ask the Syrian government to cooperate in identifying the sender and apprehending him.

Stop making lousy excuses to avoid resolving this issue !

Missing greatpierro 27 October 2012, 19:28

Let say they can meet via video conferencing. But do you think that is how thing should work in this country. Should we not whatever side we belong to condemn as strongly as possible those threats and voice all together our support for those 5 mp's.

Missing peace 27 October 2012, 19:41

M8 don t bother about murders of M14 people! they rejoice on the contrary...just a little condemnation not to shock the public opinion.
MPs are killed? they will never try and fight the source of these murders as their ally commits them...

Missing peace 27 October 2012, 20:02

we all know you are a hero FT ; that you d face a death threat only by professional consciousness, to become a FPM martyr! why are you still wasting your time here instead of running for the position of MP! you d teach them a lot with all your knowledge on everything!

what a shame this country doesn t have you as a leader! we d thrive economically in a peaceful country protected by you!

la critique est aisee mais l'art est difficile...

Missing greatpierro 27 October 2012, 19:32

I would expect from you to condemn those threats and voice your support for the 5 mp's. We need to have a plural political life and active mp's to move forward the electoral law. It does no good for any of us lebanese if we continue treating the other of sum, stupid, illiterate and the like. Why not elevate the debate on this forum and look at the events in the most constructive way.

LOL no insult in my posts to you but you answer straight away by insults... so i take it that your cabeza is EMPTY! doesn t surprise me, what is good for others is not for you? typical from a M8 supporter, double standards as usual....

@FlameThrower
Stop acting like you are an expert on e erything. If indeed Skype video conferencing was that secure then the UN could have opted to use it I stead of their own secure video conferencing.
That side, the IP addresses of participants in a Skype conference cn easily be determined and their location pinpointed. It is not that hard to do. Moreover, the encryption used is not strong enough for government level discussions let alone the possibility of a third party recording the conference.
Computers software and security is what I do for a living. Quit pretending you are an expert on everything especially this.
What a laughable proposition.

People in Lebanon should feel safe to leave their homes and not having to worry about being killed, the soluation is simple go to the Syrain ( death factory) sorry meaning the Embassy in Beirut get Ali and either kick him out or make him sit in a car full ot TNT and blow the fucker up.FT why should M14 or M8 use Skype to communicate,in Syria the rgime dont use Skype and the same with the jews in Israel, both them Countries cause lots of trouble to Lebanon , so why should we use Skype in our own country and become prisoners in our own back yard..

Missing greatpierro 28 October 2012, 02:41

March 14, how about asking your leaders to do as cheikh Saad al-Haribi Telteyn al-Marajil did? Need I tell you what he did? Not only will your leaders remain safe, but the no-good-by-those will go on quite well. Just think about it for a second. You'll get the best of both worlds: safe leaders as well as good-for-nothing leaders! Don't get too nervous now, though. I assure you that this situation will not last longer than a little over two short months. As you may already know, Dr. Arreet 7akeh predicted that the Syrian regime might fall again in 2012. From experience, I believe every word that never leaves his mouth. Right? You have been waiting since 2005. Can you not wait a couple more months? Is that too much asking from compatriots? Please be understanding and get together, warriors, and relay to your leaders my humble advice. Go, go, go, go, go warriors.

Other than that there's no argument, of course they can conference online. This gov sucks so bad, they're only in power cause we're scared of em (Amal, hizballah, SSNP).
