Jumblat Gears up for a 'Rescue Initiative' to End Political Crisis
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةIn parallel with President Michel Suleiman's strenuous efforts to find a solution for the political gridlock, head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblat seems to be following the same path and plans to launch a “rescue initiative” which he will announce in a press conference, the al-Liwaa daily quoted sources close to Jumblat Saturday.
Jumblat's initiative is keen to preserve civil peace and will call on political powers, particularly Hizbullah and the al-Mustaqbal Movement, to resume contacts.
He will urge the March 14-led opposition to resume dialogue and back down from its decision to boycott parliamentary activities, the daily added.
Jumblat has for that purpose contacted several March 14 officials including former Premier Saad Hariri, head of the al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc Fouad Saniora, and officials of the Jamaa Islamiya.
The date of the press conference has not be scheduled yet.
The opposition decided to boycott parliamentary activities after the assassination of ISF Information Bureau chief Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan in October. The alliance accuses the Syrian regime of being behind the murder and blames PM Najib Miqati's cabinet for covering the crime.
The Secretary General of the Progressive Socialist Party Zafer Nasser revealed Jumblat's initiative without elaborating on the details and said it is “consistent with Suleiman's endeavors to solve the political gridlock.”
“Boycotting dialogue and sit-ins are wrong. Overthrowing the cabinet cannot be done in the street,” he said.
The initiative calls for supporting Suleiman's efforts to form a national unity cabinet where all parties bear responsibility to reactivate the work of the state and address the regional implications on Lebanon, both coming from the ongoing war in Syria or the Israeli aggression on Gaza, said the daily.
He maybe but I am not. Horrific as a civil war is and has been, opting to succumb to HA hegemony and letting it take over Lebanon is still much worse. IMHO.
starsky you must live in another land far from Lebanon if you are not scared and not have any relatives in Lebanon as Civil War seems imminent, PS How's Hutch doing? While I don't like Jumblat much or his constant slight shifts of position he is still standing and wants to remain so as long as possible and it's called Valiun idiot.
really? you think that two men can salvage whatever is left of Lebanon? remember that they are in their positions because the syrians wanted them there. and if Suleiman is remembered for anything during his tenure, it is the present situation in Lebanon, it happened, and is happening now, on his watch. I know people say a lot of good things about him and Kahwaji, but they are as useless as most so called politicians in Lebanon. they are not leaders, we need leaders today, and that is why nasrallah and assir are so damn successful, they are providing leadership. if you want to get rid of them, all you have to do is have a true leader who will order to shoot to kill ANYBODY who carries a gun. unfortunately suleiman or kahwaji ARE NOT this person
When we get leaders such as Hariri señor or Gemayel junior the successful leaders you mention get them killed.
Walid Beik, with all due respect to your undeniable experience in surviving the political game through constant side changes, please forgive those who have some principles and morals left and therefore refuse to cooperate with murderers and peasants. You cannot blame others for having a backbone and refusing to cover for illegal arms and militias - enough is enough.
A unity govermnent is a different label for ' cold civil war ' ! The only way out of the crisis is to bring the serial murderers to justice! The Hakim said all this time, in his latest press conference: Hizbollah (under different name in the early 80's ) has been a terrorist murdering organisation since the early 80's and has been responsible for all listed by the Hakim and much more which he probably couldn't fit in one press conference ! No one has ever said it so clearly Hakim. Well done !
Well said ...
The fact is that these "pranks" are inspired by the designs of other countries ... Saudi Arabia, NATO, Iran, Israel to name a few.
Lebanon must strive for peace among all its' people. The alternatives, as you put so well, are pain and suffering ...
