Suleiman Warns Against Chaos, Urges All Parties to Embrace Armed Forces

President Michel Suleiman urged on Monday all parties to embrace the Lebanese Armed Forces after he praised them in preserving security and preventing strife, and warned against chaos.

In a statement issued by Baabda palace, Suleiman “lauded the role of the military and security forces, mainly the army, in preserving security and civil peace, and preventing strife at these difficult circumstances in the region.”

He “appreciated the efforts they exerted in preserving security in the municipal by-elections that were held in some villages and towns, an indication that there is no alternative to legitimate security, which remains the only guarantee for the security of the nation and the citizen.”

Suleiman urged all parties to “embrace” the armed forces and avoid targeting them “because it is in everyone's interest without exception to stand by the state and particularly its security agencies,” said the statement.

He warned that not a single party would enjoy political or security backing if the country ends up in chaos.

The statement was issued after Suleiman headed a meeting during which he was briefed on the military assistance to Lebanon and the army's needs to allow it to implement its mission.

Also Monday, the president met with Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour who informed Suleiman that he received assurances from Bahraini authorities during his latest visit to Manama that the Gulf country will not take any measure against Lebanese expatriates there.

Relations between Bahrain and Lebanon were shaken last month when Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun criticized the international community for its stance on the unrest there.

But Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati were quick in disavowing his remarks and stressing that Lebanon holds onto its policy to distance itself from the region's crises.

Suleiman should address the problem head on. It is the salafists that create the problems. They do so in the service of Future to deny the will of the people.

Suleiman needs to commit to fulfilling his duties ... not make pronouncements of obstructionism. It is his and others remarks amplified by the press that allow a manufactured vacuum of uncertainty.

Hey comon! Do you think you hold the truth by accusing one group of all the problems?

Everybody is responsible of what is going on. You don't solve the problem by saying I am right and they are all wrong.

The sectarian security problems are being caused by salafists ... the criminal areas of security are being dealt with like the kidnap rings that are being broken up ...

They are two very different problems criminals and jihadis. Every country has a criminal element that must be policed. The salafists must be curtailed in a number of different ways.

The point is that there must be a strong government in place to respond to both problems ... not the care taker assemblage governing now. Let the people decide through a majority who will wield real power.

I support Our President and hope he urges all the political Leaders (war lords) who were involved in the past civil war and are now in Lebanon to pay back 5 to 10 percent from their own billion fortunes as a retribution and contribution to rebuild the Lebanese economic system.

This is the only way the people can feel vindicated and have their rights protected. Fighting corruption is important as well and I wish that President Sulieman forces all political leaders to agree on the election Law because the people are fed up and are hungry for equality justice and good living. The people deserve much better.

Sidon, Tripoli and Akkar ... all trouble spots created by the salafists not HA. It is the salafists in service to the Future Party and their sponsor Saudi Arabia that undermine the security of Lebanon.

I guess News travels slow in Canada ...

@ Stargate

Future has not addressed the Sidon and Tripoli salafists because these groups are supported by the Saudis.

Future's only hope is to postpone the elections. They have lost all support and much more after the assassination of Wissam al-Hassan.

Future's tactic of boycott and the revelations of support for the Syrian rebels has back fired in a big way.

Future has also been using the Tripoli group to support their weapons shipments and jihadist enlistments.

Now with the calling of elections Future will lose many MPs which ever vote law is finally adopted.

HA will only agree to combine military assets once they are sure of their place in Lebanese politics. That is a long way off.

I don't see a new civil war ... nobody but the Saudi backed salafists want such a tragedy ...

There will however be much in the way of trouble due to the economic forces being exerted throughout the middle east. Lebanon will not be exempted.
