Miqati Orders Iron Fist in Tripoli Unrest: Those Who Think They’re Stronger Than State are Mistaken

Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Friday described as “suspicious” the timing of the deadly clashes that erupted earlier in the day between gunmen from Tripoli’s rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh.

“We stress that civil peace is a ‘red line’ and we shall not compromise it,” Miqati vowed at a press conference he held in Tripoli -- where he was previously scheduled, together with the northern city’s ministers, to hold a popular gathering to receive congratulations on the formation of the new cabinet.

“Those who think that they are above the law are mistaken,” the premier said, noting that he had ordered a probe into the deadly incidents and instructed security forces to strike with an “iron fist.”

“I am confident that the situation will be contained this evening,” he reassured citizens, adding that “the army has clear orders to put an end to this sedition.”

Miqati said his government was seeking “stability and development.”

“We won’t allow anyone to harm the city (Tripoli) in any way possible and when security is restored, we will begin the development process,” he pledged.

Asked whether the clashes were some kind of a “message,” Miqati said: “Security forces will put an end to this issue, and regardless of where the message came from, Tripoli will not pay the price and stability in this country is our responsibility.”

Answering another question the premier said “we can’t accuse anyone at the moment and we believe that what’s happening in Syria has nothing to do with us whatsoever.”

Miqati wrapped up the news conference by announcing that the popular meeting previously scheduled for the evening was “canceled in sympathy with the residents of Tripoli.”

Paid Hariri criminal military salafis opened fire and killed a Lebanese soldier and an Arab Democratic official. Those involved must be arrested. It is not in the interest of M14 sunnis to support these criminals. If things gets out of control, these salafis will control many Sunni areas, and like in the past, people like Hariri will be sidelined and hiding in the basements.

@Adam, You really need to know what a mental giant (in your own mind) you are:

for me, you are a dust close to be feathered. No matter how much power you have, you simply look like chimp drumming his hairy chest.
You need a brain man. Can you go and post somewhere else

When a "government" comes to power by extra-constitutional means, that is, not by the result of a free election, but through the intimidation of arms and by force, then the head of that "government" has no ground to stand upon to demand that the laws shall not be violated. The existence of the Mikati government is a violation of the basic organic law of the state, the Constitution itself.

Do not be surprised that others have followed your lead, Mikati, in engaging in lawlessness.

Go to Beirut and try to get a policy statement out of Aoun. Good luck!

What is the best way to give up ones own Lebanese citizenship. I would swap it for a ticker to the zoo if it was an option.

So, "those who think they are stronger than the state are mistaken". Is that what he said???? Mikati -- who leads a government that was dictated by Hezbollah which thinks and acts like it is not only stronger than the state, but is the state -- Mikati is making this kind of statement?! He should look in the mirror. When the leadership engages in lawlessness; when the leadership acquired power through lawlessness, this attidute permeates the entire society and country.

The fish rots from the head first.

“Those who think that they are above the law are mistaken,” the premier said...
Dear Premier, you have our full support provided your statement is addressed to everybody on the Lebanese soil without exception!
Your mission is very difficult but do believe that there are plenty of decent non-politically biased Lebanese who would extend you there full support to help you raise this nation to a civilized, modern, just, non religiously entangled and humanistic society. We're optimistic we can surmount also miserable anachronic feodalism and tend towards a true and fair democracy....
Nb: to Adam: cool down great warrior!

NOT TOLD, JUST DO IT, with words, the ink sea cover the media, but with action wont be increased the martyrs list's name each time what one clashes appear in Lebanon, this kind of act always remain without solving, so it would be interesting if the new cabinet is avaible or not, of stoping, what one similar appears in different areas, like bread of day.
