Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat held talks Tuesday night at his Clemenceau residence with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly on current political developments.

The meeting, which included a dinner banquet held in the guests’ honor, was attended by Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ghazi al-Aridi.

Earlier on Tuesday, the MP stressed that “the National Struggle Front will not cover or take part in any vengeful or malicious acts” that may be carried out by the new government against its political rivals.

“That does not mean that it will not agree on holding accountable those who violate the laws, but that should be done according to the applicable rules and standards,” Jumblat added.

He noted that “the best the political forces participating in the cabinet can offer to guarantee the success of its course and work is to keep away from anything that may stir political and media debates, which only lead to aggravating tensions.”

“What’s required is to build atmospheres that allow this government to make achievements in several accumulating issues, instead of wasting time on subsidiary debates,” Jumblat went on to say.

He stressed that vengeful acts “will only serve to deepen the current rift among the various parties.”

“Let us give this new government a chance to rebuild trust and embark on steps and solutions we are in dire need of, and let us leave behind debates and accusations,” Jumblat added.
