Asir, Shaker Charged in Absentia over Sidon Gunbattles

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr charged on Thursday 27 people, 10 of them in absentia, including Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir and singer-turned Salafist Fadel Shaker, over the deadly clashes with the Lebanese army.
The charges came after the army intelligence handed over the detained suspects to Saqr on Thursday.
If convinced, the suspects face the death penalty.
According to the state-run National News Agency, Saqr was also handed the preliminary investigation reports.
The fighting near the southern city of Sidon was sparked late last month when Asir's supporters opened fire on an army checkpoint, leaving around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunmen dead.
The gunbattles concentrated in the area of Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque and nearby buildings in Abra.
Al-Asir, a 45-year-old cleric who supports the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad, is no where to be found along with Shaker.
Asir teamed up with Shaker, a onetime prominent singer-turned Salafist, when around two years ago he began agitating for Hizbullah to disarm.

Sure why not. Also we want HA to do the same since they ambushed our politicians, Samer Hanna, and they are outlaws. Stop measuring with two measures ..... be fair and consistent. repeat after me mc: Only the army and ISF shoulld carry arms (let me hear say it .......... not in 3 days, or 3 weeks, or 3 years, or not in 300 years - I KNOW).

Saudi/Wahabi terrorists are the equalizers to HA and. Both of them are cultures of violence (M14 is free from both of them, ours is a culture of life and progress).

killing and violence without delivering justice for the living will not end any conflict. This is why justice should prevail in the form of removing all arms from all (ALL) so the only voice heard is the voice of the voter and the only strength that counts is that delivered in the ballot box.
An army that can only deal with the weaker party and ignore the stronger party will not be respected or trusted.......... so the army command better be aware of that while they still have sufficient credibility with the populace.

I want to point one thing you also said "to wear a uniform is a great honor". I agree but we all know that not everyone wearing that uniform has honor. I am not trying to offend, but it is the truth.
And I am not sure if you read a previous post where lebpatriot" told me I should kiss the land HA walks on. My reply was I will only kiss the land of Lebanon and the the place where every LAF soldier sacrificed their life. I fee weird trying to defend my patriotism, but I have to assume you do not know me and hence I am giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Chopper what sort of a statement is that towards our LAF? They carry their own blood on the palm of their hands, whilst protecting our citizens from fanatical uprising against our sons . The Cedar is not a play ground in a school yard, never discredit our Sunni, Shia , Dirzi & Christians who make up this virgin institution ! Would you trade you Soul for $12000 per year ? No . But if you have the belief of protecting your country then you would , right ? Well that's what our Soldiers are doing , so please chopper keep away from our beloved minders of our Cedar ! It is a Green/white Red line never to be crossed. Attack who you like but not our Sons of our beloved Land !!

Glad you quoted the line. You read it in a defensive way while I meant it as an advice for the command of the army. I do not want the Asir movement to spread to moderate Sunnis. We already see this trend where the moderates are weakened giving rise to the radicals. The best way to keep the army from splitting is to enforce the same rules to all sides. You can not suppress the small and lightly armed groups while ignoring the large and well armed group who harmed our LAF on multiple occasions just like Asir did.
If you are retired, then you are old enough to see what happened to the LAF during the civil war, it splintered.
The only guarantee for LAF to be cohesive is when the same justice is administered to all and it can do that only by remaining non-political.
I said my peace, I gave my advice, this makes me a Patriot, not a traitor.

You know peace I will stretch out my hand to you , for the benefit of a doubt I do hope you are a patriot & not a traitor of our land . During the civil war I shall pass to you & to all the readers of this site as I did to my son & eventually in due time ( if god permits )to my grandsons.
Did you relise I & so many members of the LAF still wore the uniform with pride during that terrible time of the civil war ? We shaved every day & wore our berets with the Cedar been our symbol on our heads. We still respected each other as Lebanese but our main problem was that we fell on deaf ears. The Shias' in the south the Sunnis in the north & the Druze just above Beirut, & the Syrians scattered all over the place , we never encountered any problems. But guess who were our nemesis?
The LF , yes that is a matter of fact the murdering occurred by our very own sect ! Geagea killed so many of my colleagues when he invaded east Beirut.

He ordered his men to drag my fellow officers " alive " behind their jeeps towards the presidential palace, why ? Why? I will never forget .

Thanks for sharing and for wearing your heart on your sleeves. I was sure that once we communicate clearly and honestly we find that most of the posters here truly mean well (there will always be those who truly wish Lebanon will go away but they are the minority).
I only want one institution to defend the country (the LAF, not the resistance)and on Government entity to enforce the law within (the ISF, and this becomes possible only when ALL disarm). This is when Lebanon heals, its Government's institutions become functional, and its consttitution becomes the law of the land.
- I do not want Iran's agents to be armed (HA)
- I do not want the Palestinians to be armed (all their factions).
- I do not want KSA agents to be armed (Salafis, Asir and their clones).......... ditto for all other groups.
- I do not want Political corruption to infest the LAF or ISF.

I have a nephew in the LAF and he feels helpless when HA issue are encountered. Also I have a nephew in the ISF and he gets calls from politicians all the time to release criminals (not directly, but down the command chain and the majority of such call are from Berri... ).
So lets keep our Cedars eternal by keeping Lebanon clean from all za3raan and give the LAF and the ISF cover to deal all of them with equal justice.
