Initial Deal in Parliament to Speed up Approval of Electoral Law as Opposition's Christians Forward Own Proposal

The joint parliamentary committees discussed for the second time on Thursday the government's electoral draft-law amid deep divisions between different parliamentary blocs on the districts and the type of electoral system despite an initial agreement on resolving the issue within a certain timeframe.

The government's draft-law divides Lebanon into 13 medium-sized districts based on proportional representation. But huge differences between the March 8 majority coalition and the opposition March 14 alliance are likely to spiral out of control.

Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat criticized the March 14 opposition on Thursday for not consulting him on a new law drafted by the coalition's Christians in coordination with al-Mustaqbal movement.

“No one consulted us on either big or small-sized districts,” he told local newspapers.

Geagea Says Postponement of 2013 Elections Out of Question

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea revealed on Thursday that his party is expected to submit a proposal before the joint parliamentary committees concerning the new electoral law, reiterating that the postponement of the 2013 parliamentary elections is out of the question.

“We have been preparing a new electoral law to forward it (to parliament) with our allies,” Geagea said in comments published in al-Akhbar newspaper.

Qahwaji Concludes UK Visit, Discusses Bolstering Assistance to Lebanese Army

Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji conducted an official visit to the United Kingdom on September 24 and 25 as a guest of the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Sir David Richards, announced the British Embassy in Lebanon in a statement.

During the course of his visit Qahwaji met with senior officials at the Ministry of Defense, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the National Security Council.

Three Wounded in Ain el-Hilweh Clash

Three people were wounded on Wednesday at the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh in southern Lebanon, reported the National News Agency.

It said that three Palestinians were wounded in an individual dispute that broke out when Mohammed Ismail attempted to enter the United Nations Relief and Works Agency office at the camp.

Press TV Lebanese Bureau Chief Wounded, Reporter Killed in Syria

Iran's Press TV and al-Alam network bureaus chief in Syria, Lebanese national Hussein Mortada, was wounded on Wednesday in a sniper attack that left his colleague dead as they reported from the site of twin bomb blasts near Syrian army headquarters.

Both channels reported that Mortada was shot in the back by sniper fire in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Army Raids Hideout in Rashaya, Detains Three Suspects

The army confiscated a large amount of weapons after raiding a suspected arms hideout in al-Bireh town in Rashaya, the National News Agency reported on Wednesday.

According to a communique issued by the army, the raid was carried out on Tuesday night and the army seized light military rifles, hand grenades, ammunition, various military equipment and communication devices.
