Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea urged President Michel Suleiman on Friday to assign the dates for holding discussions over nominating a prime minister, expressing that premier Najib Miqati's resignation was a “brave” step.

"I praise Miqati's brave step especially after March 8 forces rejected the extension of security and military leaders' terms,” Geagea said in a released statement shortly after the PM announced the cabinet's resignation from the Grand Serail.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri discussed separately with Speaker Nabih Berri and Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, the latest developments on the controversial electoral draft-law issue, Hariri's media office said in a statement Friday.

In a phone call, Hariri and Berri tackled the latest developments in that regard and the efforts exerted to reach common ground between conflicting parliamentary blocs on an electoral law that meets approval of all, the statement added.

Internal Security Forces chief Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi stressed on Friday that he will hand over his post at the end of March, ruling out that the cabinet would extend his tenure.

“The extension of my term requires the votes of two-thirds of the cabinet, which will not be provided as more than half of the members reject the extension of my tenure,” Rifi told An Nahar newspaper.

Lebanese Forces leader MP Samir Geagea lashed out on Wednesday at the cabinet for its failure to carry out its tasks, revealing that the March 14 hybrid electoral law is almost ready.

“The resignation of the cabinet and the electoral law are our priorities,”' Geagea said in an interview with al-Akhbar newspaper.
