At Least 6 Migrants Drown Off Morocco Coast

At least six would-be migrants drowned when their boat capsized near Melilla, the Spanish enclave in Morocco, authorities said Friday.

Another 10 people were rescued from the water after the boat overturned off the Moroccan town of Nador, five kilometers (three miles) from Melilla.

Lebanon to File Complaint against Israeli Strikes

Lebanon will file a complaint at the United Nations over the Israeli shelling on Lebanese territories and the death of a Spanish peacekeeper with the U.N. force in southern Lebanon, media reports said on Friday.

According to al-Akhbar newspaper, Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil asked Nawaf Salam, Lebanon's Permanent Representative to the U.N., to file the complaint.

Spain Airport Operator Unions Call Strikes Against Privatization

The two main unions at Spanish airport operator AENA on Thursday called 27 strike days between February and August in protest at the partial privatization of the firm.

The first strike is scheduled for February 11, the day the state will list a minority stake on the world's largest airport operator, the secretary general of one of the two unions, USO-AENA, said.

NATO Jet Crash in Spain due to Takeoff Failure

The F-16 fighter jet that crashed during a NATO exercise in Spain on Monday, killing 11, experienced a technical failure during takeoff and the two pilots tried to eject, the French air force said Thursday.

"What we know is that the crew of the F-16, quite quickly after takeoff, tried to eject, which confirms the technical failure," said General Denis Mercier, the French air force chief of staff, without giving details of the breakdown.

Hashish-Filled Helicopter Crashes in Spain Killing Pilots

A helicopter loaded with hashish crashed in southern Spain after hitting an electricity pylon, killing its two pilots, police said Wednesday.

The helicopter crashed in the early hours of Tuesday near the mountain town of Cortes de la Frontera in Malaga province. The bodies of its pilot and co-pilot have been recovered, a local police spokesman said.

Spanish U.N. Soldier Killed by Israeli Retaliatory Fire after Shebaa Attack

A U.N. peacekeeper from Spain was killed on Wednesday when the Israeli military shelled border areas following a Hizbullah attack that left two Israeli soldiers dead.

A 36-year-old corporal "died this morning during incidents between Hizbullah and the Israeli army in the area of responsibility of the Spanish contingent", the Spanish defense ministry said in a statement.

Diego Neria Lejarraga met the pontiff on Saturday after writing to him in December to complain he was being treated as an outcast in his parish in Plasencia in western Spain, according to the Spanish daily Hoy.

Ten Dead, 13 Injured in Greek Fighter Jet Crash in Spain

A Greek fighter jet crashed Monday on takeoff at a military airbase in Spain housing a NATO training center for elite pilots, killing at least 10 people and injuring 13, the defense ministry said.

The F-16 jet "lost power" as it took off from the base near the southeastern city of Albacete and crashed into an area where other planes were parked, striking several of them, the defense ministry said in a statement.
