Spain Wants to Modify Schengen Rules to Allow Border Checks

Spain's Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said Sunday he will make the case in Paris for a modification to the Schengen treaty allowing border controls in order to limit the movements of Islamic fighters returning to Europe from the Middle East.

"We are going to back border controls and it is possible that as a consequence it will be necessary to modify the Schengen treaty," he told the daily El Pais ahead of a ministerial meeting on the subject in Paris.

Madrid Rail Station Evacuated over False Alert

Police evacuated a busy metro and commuter railway station in Madrid on Thursday during the evening rush hour after a suspicious package was found that was later determined not to be dangerous, a police spokeswoman said.

The Nuevos Ministerios station, which serves three lines of Madrid's metro system as well as six regional commuter railway lines, was closed just before 6.00 pm (1700 GMT) after the package was located at one of its entrances, the spokeswoman said.

Suspicious Package Forces Evacuation of Media Group in Madrid

Spanish media group Prisa, publisher of the country's most widely-read newspaper El Pais, evacuated its Madrid headquarters Wednesday after receiving a suspect package that was later found not to be dangerous, a spokesman said.

Police ordered the evacuation after a man delivered the package around two hours after an attack on the offices of a satirical weekly in Paris that left 12 people dead, said El Pais' communications director Pedro Zuazua.

150 Migrants Rescued Off Spanish Coast in Several Days

Almost 150 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean in makeshift boats have been rescued off the coast of Spain in less than a week, officials said Sunday.

In the largest of several rescue operations last week, a boat carrying 53 people was spotted on Friday by a ferry off the coast of Andalusia in southern Spain, local emergency services said.

100 Migrants Scale Fence to Enter Spain's Melilla

More than 100 migrants on Tuesday managed to scale the six-metre fence surrounding the Spanish exclave of Melilla to enter the territory while around 40 remained perched on the barrier, officials said.

Some 200 people tried to storm into the territory that lies in northern Morocco -- which together with the nearby exclave of Ceuta have Europe's only land borders with Africa -- in the early morning hours, Melilla police said in a statement.
