Three students were killed and seven others injured on Saturday when part of a cliff collapsed at the Bhanine school in the northern Minieh-Dinniyeh district, the National News Agency reported.

NNA identified the dead as Abdul Rahman al-Siddiq, 16, Osama Zreiqa, 18, and 8-year-old Ahmed al-Rifai.

The incident also destroyed a small wall in the playground of the school.

Al-Minyeh MPs Ahmed Fatfat, Kazem Khair Eddine and Qassem Abdul Aziz said in a statement that the authorities should swiftly investigate the accident.

“The cabinet should establish a Disaster Management Authority…” the statement said.

They urged Education Minister Hassan Diab to swiftly act, holding him responsible for any similar disasters in schools.

Also Saturday, the wall of a church in the Metn district town of Atshana collapsed by a rain-triggered mudslide, NNA said.

The incident damaged a Mercedes and a BMW parked near the wall, NNA added.

President Michel Suleiman called for an investigation to find out the causes of the accident.

The collapse of a building in Beirut’s Ashrafiyeh neighborhood on January 15 that killed 27 people, has sparked fears in Lebanon of more tragedies.

The widespread anger led to a government decision to dismantle the metal bridge in Jal el-Dib that links Beirut with Jounieh and the North after fears that it could also collapse.

But last week, one person was killed and seven people were injured when a building under construction collapsed in the coastal town of Tabarja, north of Beirut.

Going to school in Lebanon is not safe.

Blame the corrupt Al Mustaqbal and their thugs of MPs for illegally allowing the school to open when they were the ones wielding power despite the dangers of collapse. Now they have the arrogance to call it fatalism! FATALISM, YOU CROOKS AND CRIMINALS? FATALISM? Our fate is to have had their filth since the days of Rafic Syria, may he and they rot in hell.

another example of the lebanese government crisis management policy. wait for something bad to happen then we look at fixing it. If only they were as interested in lebanon as they are in their own ego's we would be fine.

lice mountain aka jabal amel, who do you think provides building permits, issues building codes and oversees construction? granted the current government didn't approve the construction, however when they assumed office they became the responsible body for such issues, therefore my point was that they knew of the problems surrounding poor construction, have they conducted any audits of major sights, old developements or have they even set up a hot line where people can report their concerns of any at risk buildings. I don't think so! any responsible government would do these things as a minimum particulary after recent events. hope that is clear enough for you champ!

While we all sit and fight about stupid political issues (you vs me mentality), the country is crumbling beneath our feet.

It's time to wake the hell up and for people to start demanding that their government provide all the basic necessities for a sustainable and prosperous society...

And that all starts with the creation of a non-corrupt urban planning & development department, with a focus on sustainability, ethics, green initiatives. (Since we are talking about buildings and bridges crumbling)

Time for protest people!
