Lebanon tries to pick up pieces after devastating war

Lebanon is trying to pick up the pieces and return to some level of normal life after a war with Israel that decimated large swaths of its south and east, displacing an estimated 1.2 million people.

Berri condemns 'flagrant' truce violations as Israel strikes east and south

Since a fragile ceasefire went into effect last week, Israel has violated the agreement dozens of times. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri counts more than 52.

The number of violations has risen since Speaker Berri's interview with al-Joumhouria newspaper was published Monday, on the sixth day of the truce. An Israeli drone strike wounded Monday a Lebanese army soldier in the eastern region of Hermel, while another drone targeted a motorcycle in Marjaayoun, killing a State Security agent on duty.

Boulos calls on Lebanese to take their time in picking new president

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs, Massad Boulos, has said that Trump has “honored his promise” as to working on achieving peace in the Middle East once elected, noting that the ceasefire in Lebanon was an “achievement” made by U.S. President Joe Biden “in cooperation” with Trump.

Pope urges Lebanon to elect a new president immediately

Pope Francis called on Lebanese politicians on Sunday to urgently elect a new president, with a view of restoring normal government functions in the country.

"I address an urgent invitation to all Lebanese politicians to elect the president of the republic immediately," the pontiff said at Saint Peter’s Square at the end of Sunday Angelus prayer.
