Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea and Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblat were quick to react on Wednesday to Hizbullah's attack against an Israeli military vehicle in the Shebaa Farms, warning that Lebanon is headed towards a “turbulent” period.

The Foreign Ministry meanwhile condemned Israel's shelling of Lebanese territory.

Lebanese leaders on Friday hailed late Saudi King Abdullah as an “Arab knight” and a “great friend” who supported Lebanon during tough times as the country observed a three-day mourning period.

“Lebanon lost a helper and supporter,” Prime Minister Tammam Salam said.

Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblat has expressed pessimism on the ability of rival parties to resolve the presidential deadlock through dialogue and accused Israel of drawing a demarcation line between the Jewish State and Iran.

According to As Safir daily published on Thursday, Jumblat said there was no positive development in the presidential crisis despite the talks between Hizbullah and al-Mustaqbal representatives.

Former MP Ghattas Khoury concluded on Wednesday his testimony before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, revealing that the Syrian regime did not heed calls to refrain from harming Lebanese officials.

He said in his cross-examination by the Defense: “The international community had warned Syria against harming former Premier Rafik Hariri and MP Walid Jumblat, but it ignored it.”

Speaker Nabih Berri has accused Israel of seeking to hit Lebanon every time the country makes progress towards stability as a report said that he held contacts with top officials to contain the repercussions of an Israeli strike that killed several Hizbullah members.

“Every time we take steps forward in terms of achieving stability … Israel tries to create chaos,” local dailies on Monday quoted Berri as telling his visitors.

A meeting held at MP Walid Jumblat's residence in Clemenceau failed Wednesday to convince activists to call off planned protests aimed at securing the closure of the controversial Naameh landfill on January 17, as organizers called on Environment Minister Mohammed al-Mashnouq to step down.

During a rally for the Campaign for the Closure of the Naameh Landfill, a spokesman called on al-Mashnouq to “resign immediately after his failure to find an alternative solution for the landfill,” urging “a popular rally at the landfill's entrance on January 17.”

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat reiterated on Wednesday calls for the legalization of hashish in Lebanon as the theory of alternative crops failed.

“I hold onto my opinion on the necessity of legalizing the cultivation of hashish,” Jumblat said in comments published in As Safir newspaper.

Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblat lauded on Tuesday security forces and Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq on the successful operation that led to the closure of the notorious block B in Roumieh prison.

“I salute the Internal Security Forces that executed with an admirable success the operation at Roumieh prison and imposed the authority of the state,” said Jumblat via twitter.

Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblat said on Monday that targeting Jabal Mohsen and the Alawites “serves the purpose of the Syrian regime,” as he strongly condemned the double suicidal bombing that rocked the pro-Assad Tripoli district.

He also stressed his support for Sunday's rally against terrorism in France while questioning the participation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Environment Minister Mohammed al-Mashnouq stressed on Saturday that the cabinet would reach a decision on the waste management file by January 17, the deadline for closing the Naameh landfill and the date when the contract with the company, which collects dumps in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, expires.

Al-Mashnouq told Ad-Diyar daily published on Saturday that the decision would not be reached over the weekend but definitely at the start of next week.
