Doctor Moussa Abou Hamad will be released from custody after being detained from allegedly being responsible for the death of a pregnant woman, reported the National News Agency.

He will be released on a bail of L.L. 50 million, said Voice of Lebanon radio.

He is expected to be released in the next day or two, it added.

His detention sparked the Doctors Syndicate to go on strike on Monday in protest against the arrest.

“The doctors are not criminals and no one should be treated on this basis,” Mustaqbal bloc MP Dr. Atef Majdalani said during a sit-in held at the headquarters of the syndicate.

He stressed that all doctors are “under the law,” asking authorities to treat them objectively.

For his part, Doctors' syndicate Chief Sharaf Abou Sharaf pointed out that “the syndicate is the only side authorized to investigate any medical act.”

He stressed that the doctors are “holding onto the Lebanese law even if its decision was unfair.”

On May 13, Rita Jebrail Zoughaib, who was 8-months pregnant, died 36 hours of being submitted to Sayyedat Lebnan hospital in Jounieh due to severe nausea.

The woman’s family held the doctor responsible for the death of Rita and her unborn child.

“The immunity of the doctor should be protected by the law,” Abou Sharaf said.

He criticized the judge who issued the verdict against Abou Hamad, demanding the authorities to hold him responsible for violating the law.

Chief of Editors Syndicate Elias Aoun withdrew from the sit-in after he was prevented from continuing his statement for defending the media.

“The media reports what it sees,” Aoun said.

A delegation later headed to the Justice Palace in Beirut to protest to Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi the detention of their colleague.

...Doctors' syndicate Chief Sharaf Abou Sharaf pointed out that “the syndicate is the only side authorized to investigate any medical act.” Did anyone ever heard of a doctor held responsible for anything?? what investigation?!

One can not be thrown in jail before an investigation is concluded. Even if an error is proven, that happens..we all commit errors. What has to be seen though is whether that doctor was negligent.

Let me understand it ... you hold doctors liable for their practice, no one will want to become doctor anymore ... everyone wins ?? Grow a pair, and learn about unintended consequences of stupid decisions.

If the death was the result from incompetence, the doctor should be barred from practicing. If the death was the result of a malignant act with the intention to harm or kill, then arrest the physician.

Again, under the sun, lebanese blood boils too quickly, and leaves little room for a thoughtful response. Let's burn the books and the witches, and arrest/deport anyone who disagree with us, right ?

for your information guys: there over 4000 peiple in jail without having been investigated yet. and they have been there for many years.
either the law is faulty, thus it needs to be changed, or the judges are not working.
btw, being a doctor should not exempt you from being treated as any other lebanese.
accrding to the law, if you cause death driving your car, even if it is not your fault your are arrested and thrown in jail. what happened is the same.

I don't know anything about this doctor, but many doctors in Lebanon are butchers with a license to kill and nevertheless go completely unpunished. The order of physicians in Lebanon has been an utter failure when it comes to instigate some ethics in the sector; it only cares about its members, not about the patients. The whole medical profession is in urgent need of reform.
